Seward (Alutiiq: Qutalleq) is a home rule city in Alaska, United States. It sits on Resurrection Bay, a fjord of the Gulf of Alaska on the Kenai Peninsula, on Alaska’s southern coast. It is about 120 miles by road from Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage, and nearly 1,300 miles from the nearest point in the contiguous United States at Cape Flattery, Washington.
With an estimated permanent population of 2,831 people as of 2017, Seward is the fourth-largest city in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, after Kenai, Homer, and the borough seat, Soldotna. The city is named after former U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, who arranged the United States’ purchase of Alaska from the Russian Empire in 1867 while serving in this role in President Andrew Johnson’s administration.
Seward is the southern terminus of the Alaska Railroad and the historic starting point of the original Iditarod Trail into Alaska’s interior, with Mile 0 of the trail marked on the shoreline at the southern end of the town.

Day 2
hubbard glacier (cruising)
Arrival: 14:00
-
Departure: 17:00
The Hubbard Glacier is a glacier located in the Saint Elias Mountains in Alaska (United States) and in the Yukon Territory in Canada.
From its origin in the Yukon Territory, the glacier stretches for about 122 km to Disenchantment Bay and Yakutat Bay. This makes it the longest tidewater glacier in Alaska, with a face more than 10 km wide. Before reaching the sea, it is joined by the Valerie Glacier which, according to experts, adds extra pressure that will eventually lead to the permanent separation of Russell Fjord from Disenchantment Bay.
In May 1986, and again in spring 2002, this temporary separation occurred, forming Lake Russell. After the fjord’s water level rose to about 25 m above sea level in the summer of 1986, at around midnight on 8 October 1986 the water pressure finally broke through the ice dam and the fjord was reconnected to the ocean. It was the second-largest jökulhlaup (glacial outburst flood) ever recorded.
