Maiori, Italy

Maiori Italy

The exact origins of the town are uncertain, though it was probably founded by the Etruscans. The Romans conquered it in the 3rd century BC, and it was known as Rheginna Maior, in contrast to the neighbouring town of Minori, Rheginna Minor. All the settlements along the coast were shaped over time by alternating rulers, including the Etruscans and the Romans. Between 830 and 840, the coastal towns between Lettere and Tramonti and Cetara and Positano, including the island of Capri, united to form a confederation of states later known as the Duchy of Amalfi. Each city kept its own name and administrative autonomy, but had a specific role within the federation. Maiori was the seat of the duchy’s admiralty, customs, the salt market and several arsenals.
